Grace Powers Fraioli, Artist

The creation of the Apostle Symbols for my church has been one of the major highlights of my career as an artist. Reflecting back to the start of the project, I was inspired to spend many hours reading the Scripture, learning the stories of the Apostles and the meaning of the symbolisms. I frequently reviewed the former canvas symbols which had been removed by the workers. Using this research and finding time to while away at our cabin in the mountains, I started the laborious work of rolling out slabs of clay, assembling the clay shields, and hand sculpting the relief images. It became a beautiful time in my faith journey as I truly felt God's guiding light with me as I worked. I was reminded of the earth tones of our sanctuary, the eternal blue of the and the sun's radiant casting of holy light through the stained glass windows creating dancing rainbows.

It has been a tremendous challenge and I am honored to have been chosen to create these shields. I have walked with Jesus and have grown in my spiritual journey. May these expressions of faith be great teachings and inspiration to all who enter this sacred place and especially to children and families in the future.

"Store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. The eye is the lamp of the body.  If your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light. " (Matthew 6:20-22)
