Loving God and neighbor takes many forms.  One of the primary ways we live out that mission is by serving our neighbors, and thus serving God.

Our service to others is a central aspect of membership here.  It pervades every part of our shared life from worship, education, to church gatherings and more. Below you will find some of the ways we’ve chosen to serve, within our Village and beyond our Village.  We invite you to participate with us or help us to think of new ways to serve God and neighbor.

For more information on all of our Outreach programs listed below, or to volunteer, please contact Amy Brelia, Chair of the Outreach Committee, at amy@sbcpa.com

within our Village

Food Pantry

Our congregation is actively involved with the local Food Pantry under the direction of the Larchmont/Mamaroneck Hunger Task Force.  Every month we collect foods, designated by the food pantry as the item of the month.  Volunteers also help sort and pack food, and help deliver it to local families.  If you’re interested in serving with this ongoing project please contact Mindy Wintermantel at mindysaddlemire@yahoo.com.

Midnight Run

We are also active participants in the Midnight Run, a feeding and clothing ministry to the homeless of New York City.  There are various ways to help:

  • Contributing clean and gently, used men's clothing, or blankets (these may be placed in collection bins in the Lower Church Parlor)

  • Helping to sort the clothing

  • Helping to prepare the food (brown-bag lunches are needed, as well as 5 gallons of soup or chili)

  • Participating on the run to distribute the items and meet the men and women we serve

Please contact Bruce Meighan bsmeighan@optonline.net or Amy Brelia amy@sbcpa.com for more information on how to participate or get involved with this ministry.

Red Chair Project

If you’ve ever seen any of the numerous home improvement shows on television, then you have an idea of what this ministry entails.  Church members and other volunteers work on a home for a ‘blitz’ weekend and create a space of warmth, comfort, and hospitality for families whose means limit their ability to do so.  We partner with the Hispanic Resource Center and the Washingtonville Housing Alliance in identifying families and homes who are in greatest need of loving care.

If you’re interested in serving on one of the weekends (no prior skills necessary—just a willingness to learn and get slightly dirty)

Christmas Angels

Each Christmas season church members work with the local Community Action Program (CAP) center to provide families with gifts they otherwise would not be able to provide.  This is a great way to share the holiday season.

If you’re interested in learning more about this program, please contact Pam Tucker at pamofrye@aol.com

beyond our Village

El Ayudante Orphanage, Nicaragua

In February 2005 our church participated in the construction work at the El Ayudante Orphanage in Leon, Nicaragua.  El Ayudante is an ecumenical, non-profit, Christian ministry whose purpose is to serve the children of Leon and Nicaragua.

Nicaragua is the second poorest nation in the western hemisphere and their need is great.  We returned to Leon in February 2006 and regularly thereafter.  We have established an on-going relationship with El Ayudante, and subsequent teams from MUMC will continue to help with construction, health-care, and education at the orphanage and at other sites as the local ministry officials determine.  Our hope is that as our relationship with El Ayudante and the people of Leon evolves, we will be able to see and experience significant growth and change in the lives of all involved, both in Leon and Mamaroneck.  Our trip is scheduled to take place February 4 - 12, 2011.

If you are interested in learning more about this life changing service opportunity, please email richard@mamaroneckumc.org.  You may also visit the El Ayudante website at www.nicamissions.com

Heifer Project

Through Heifer Project International, we have the opportunity to provide life-giving gifts to hungry families living in poverty in many parts of the world. Heifer Project animals offer struggling families a way to feed themselves and care for the earth. This gift of self-reliance through farm animals that produce both food and income, helps children receive nutritious milk or eggs, and enables families to earn income for school, healthcare, and better housing. The benefit extends far into the local communities, as every family that receives livestock also agrees to pass on one or more of its animal’s offspring to a neighbor in need. Communities then can go beyond meeting immediate needs to fulfilling new dreams of a life beyond poverty.

Kairos Prison Ministry

Kairos is a program that takes the love and teachings of Christ to the women of the Danbury Federal Prison.  There are many ways to support this ministry both locally and at the prison.  For more information please contact Coralie Joseph at hyacinth52@optonline.net.

SoulShine

The SoulShine is our resident Contemporary Worship Band which leads the music in our morning Services approximately once each month.

The members of The SoulShine are: Steve Gill -Guitar, Vocals; Bill Sabia - Drums, Percussion; Mike Gill - Guitar, Keys, Vocals; Johanna Farrand - Bass Flute, Vocals; Greg Haviland - Keyboards; Stephanie Harrison - Vocals; Karina Calabro - Vocals.

Lollipop Fair

Organized by the Church and the Mamaroneck Community Nursery School, the fair is the largest fundraiser of the year and helps raise money for improvement projects and outreach committee programs.  The fair is lots of fun for all kids in lower Westchester County and is usually held early October each year on the Church grounds.
