Text Box: A Brief History of the MUMC Buildings
and Property

A trip down memory lane for our long-time members!
Text Box: The first church building was erected during 1814 on what was then known as High St., and is now Prospect Ave. On February 12, 1845, this first building burned to the ground. Immediately in the spring, construction began on a new church at the same site. It was dedicated on May 8, 1845. This building is the current American Legion Hall.
Our current gothic Revival landmark building which houses the sanctuary was dedicated in 1859.
In 1869, an annex was constructed behind the sanctuary. It consisted of an upper and lower parlor to house Sunday school classes and provide meeting space.
The original parsonage (where the church house now stands on the opposite side of the circle) was sold and moved to North Barry Ave. where it still remains today.
The new parsonage, the current church house, was built and formally opened on July 19, 1896.
Just before the Depression, the church purchased the Samuel Johnson house and property, which bordered the church on the west side. This land provided the space for the future building of the Education building. The house was used for Sunday school rooms and offices. (It is currently our parsonage.)
In 1941, the pastor decided to switch the parsonage from the current church house to our present parsonage.
The church house as we know it today became used as meeting rooms and office space.
During the 1950’s the Education building was erected.
In 1994, the church bell came crashing down from its place in the steeple and into the narthex, just moments before worship began one Sunday. By God’s grace no one was killed or seriously injured. It was a call for maintenance that was long overdue, and a major restoration of the sanctuary began. The work was completed and the restored space was dedicated on December 25, 1996.
