Fall 2005 Worship Focus |
|
The Church as been at
it for 2,000 years. Hearing the same stories, singing much of the same music and gathering
around the same table. It's remarkable how it has stood the test of time, transforming
lives and communities the world over. We want no less for ourselves. Are you looking
for God? Do you need to be transformed? Are you seeking direction, purpose, meaning?
Why not start here?
A dynamic schedule of worship services have been planned including special performances by our adult and junior choirs, a holiday performance of Handel's Messiah, music by our own the Circuit Riders and by our members. This Fall will be one of the most diverse and energizing seasons of worship we've experienced. Please join us in Loving God and our neighbors as ourselves during this Fall 2005 season:
September 11 "In God we Trust: The True Meaning of Freedom" Featuring a moving rendition of "Amazing Grace" by Daniel Dieter on clarinet
September 18 "Eat, Drink, and Be Merry: Life in Christian Community" We welcome back our Senior and Junior choirs singing, "Canon of Praise"
September 25 "Doubt, Fear, and Challenging God: The Work of a Disciple" Featuring John Ireland's stirring anthem, "Grater Love Hath No Man"
October 2 "The Ten Commandments: take them Down" Combining music from the 16th and 21st centuries in "This is the Day the Lord Hast Made"
October 9 "If You've Ever Wondered What it Means to Be a Christian: Show up Today" Featuring soloist Lauren Groetch singing, "Prayer"
October 16 "Now It's Our Turn: Laity Sunday" A praise and worship music celebration led by the Circuit Riders
October 23 "Give Me That Old Time Religion: Straight talk about a life of faith" Combined Senior and Junior choirs singing, "How lovely is Thy Dwelling Place" by Brahms
October 30 "Family Values: All Saints Day (observed)" Melanie Sasaki leads a string ensemble for the annual All Saints musical memorial service
November 6 "Get Ready: The Beginning is Near!" Combined Senior and Junior Choirs singing Bach's beautiful "Wedding Duet"
November 13 "What have you done for me lately? Using our gifts" Featuring soloist Katherine Borst in "Dear Lord and Father"
November 20 "Christ the King: Of What?" Hear the thrilling anthem, "And I Saw Another Angel," with soloist Alexandra Sullivan
In addition to the beautiful music included on the schedule of worship services above, two very special offerings are planned for Advent that you won't want to miss. The cantata "Born A Savior, Born a King" by John Purifoy, and "Sing Messiah with the Yale Whiffenproofs".
"Born A Savior, Born a King" for choirs, readers and orchestra is an accessible work that anyone who can carry a tune can sing. At MUMC, we will hold six rehearsals prior to the performance, and an open invitation is extended to you and your musical friends who would like to participate in this community offering.
"Sing Messiah with the Yale Whiffenproofs" is scheduled for December 18. We are thrilled to welcome one of America's finest vocal ensembles, The Yale Whiffenproofs, for a seasonal performance followed by a Messiah Sing-In with orchestra, soloists, the Whiffenpoofs, the MUMC choirs and all our voices. It will be a glorious experience of one of the finest and most beloved pieces of sacred music.
