Born a Savior, Born a King: An Advent Cantata
On Sunday,
December 11, 2005, Mamaroneck United Methodist Church will premiere a new cantata by composer
John Purifoy. The work is for chorus, orchestra, and narrators, and includes familiar Advent
and Christmas carols as well as beautiful newly composed music. The orchestra includes
strings, winds, brass, and percussion.
The narrative are
scripture passages for the coming of Christ. The entire cantata is 45 minutes in length, so it
will occupy most of the worship service on Sunday, December 11 at 10:00 a.m.
Four Ways You Can Participate
1. Sing
with us. If you can carry a tune, and always wanted to sing in a beautiful
presentation such as this, with orchestra, or you are rusty in your singing from yesteryear,
this is a perfect opportunity. Tom Crawford, our Music Director, has special CD recordings of
the individual voice parts (soprano, alto, tenor, bass) for you to take and learn at your own
pace. You can practice in the car—it Christmas music! Then, you come to the group
rehearsals and the final dress rehearsal with orchestra well prepared and able to enjoy the
experience. Eight (8) professional singers will be with us to help lead with confidence. No
music reading skills are required. Children 9 and older are also invited and welcome to sing.
2. Invite
friends who love music to join us. They need not be members of MUMC.
3. Spread
the word about this opportunity to sing a beautiful new work for the holiday season,
with orchestra and Tom Crawford conducting.
4. Plan to
attend the special advent service on December 11, invite family, neighbors, and
friends, and invite them to lunch afterward as a demonstration of MUMC love.
